New Delhi: A Delhi court Wednesday remanded Karnataka Congress leader D K Shivakumar, who is arrested in a money laundering case, to ED’s custody till September 13. Special judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar passed the order after the ED sought 14-day custodial interrogation of Shivakumar, arrested on Tuesday night, claiming that he was evasive and non-cooperative in the probe and there was “phenomenal growth” in his income while he was in important position. Opposing ED’s contentions, Shivakumar’s counsel said that the Congress leader has already been quizzed for 33 hours by the agency and he is not a flight risk. The ED had in September last year registered the money laundering case against Shivakumar, Haumanthaiah, an employee at Karnataka Bhavan in New Delhi, and others.
New Delhi: Auto industry body SIAM on Wednesday said the industry, which has been reeling under a prolonged slump, is staring at a difficult road ahead for the rest of the year due to transition to BS-VI emission norm from BS-VI by April 2020. Terming it as a “huge challenge”, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) President Rajan Wadhera said on an average each vehicle manufacturer is spending close to Rs 1,000 crore to upgrade all of their model line-up to meet the new emission norm within a short span. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscal”The auto industry, as we all have seen in the past eight months, has witnessed continuous de-growth and August being the worst at 30 per cent,” Wadhera said, while speaking at Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) annual auto retail conclave. He further said the entire value chain of the auto industry – from component suppliers to vehicles manufacturers and dealers – have been impacted by the slowdown. “The road for the rest of the year is also looking difficult because there is a huge challenge of migration from BS-IV to BS-VI is awaiting us,” Wadhera said. Also Read – Food grain output seen at 140.57 mt in current fiscal on monsoon boostNew technologies coming into vehicle, which has to be done “in a span of three years across all models and have defect free products is a huge challenge”, he added. “On an average an OEM is spending about Rs 1,000 crore to upgrade their product portfolio,” Wadhera said. In order to ensure a smooth transition, he said, “Sales forecasting and operational efficiency has become important on account of the upcoming BS-IV to BS-VI transition”. While the dealers will be managing the front-end, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) need to ensure that there should neither be loss of sales on account of unavailability of products nor allow inventory build up or write-off which will create more hardships for the dealers, he added. In the near future, Wadhera said the auto industry will not only have to deal with slowdown and BS-VI transition, but also has “actually prepare for the future mobility” – electric, connected and autonomous. read more
21 June 2010Delegates gathered at United Nations Headquarters in New York today to explore ways of improving the implementation of a global treaty aimed at protecting oceans and the resources they hold from a range of threats, including pollution, climate change, illegal fishing and crimes. Experts attending the five-day meeting of the UN Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea will assess the needs for national and regional capacity-building as they seek to come up with the appropriate knowledge to help States protect Oceans in accordance with the provisions of the UN Law of the Sea Convention. In his report to the General Assembly on oceans and the law of the sea, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon points out that because seas are interconnected, assistance intended to strengthen capacities to manage ocean-related activities can ultimately benefit all States. He notes that effective protection of oceans continued to be hampered by capacity limitations, especially in developing countries.“These limitations and challenges may constrain the potential for States, in particular developing countries, especially the least developed among them and the small island developing States, to benefit from oceans and seas and their resources pursuant to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea,” the Secretary-General said in his report. read more

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INgnm8XIcBcYouTube: Hugh O’ConnellUpdated, 14:18PUBLIC EXPENDITURE AND Reform Minister Brendan Howlin has affirmed that he is preparing draft legislation to protect the pay of public workers, while work continues on talks to reach an agreement on how to make some savings.Howlin said this afternoon that he had asked the Labour Relations Commission chairman Kieran Mulvey to continue his current efforts, which have seen some progress made on reaching a successor to the Croke Park pay deal – including some sector-specific deals. While the Government is still keen to agree a single all-encompassing deal, it said it was prepared to enter deals with individual trade unions if no single all-encompassing deal could be reached. However, “as a contingency measure”, the Government was still moving ahead with drafting legislation which would give legal effect to a unilateral pay cut. Before this morning’s cabinet meeting, Howlin had said that “one way or another”, pay cuts would have to be made in the public sector.Howlin told reporters that cuts were necessary, and there would have to be legislation – irrespective of whether a deal is reached with unions or not – but that the government’s preference was for a negotiated settlement.“The structure of the alternatives that the government is considering are known, they will include pay cuts for anybody over €65,000,” he said.“Obviously we have to make contingency plans and I have had discussions over the last number of days, in fact since the end of the ballot, with the Attorney General’s office because one way or another we have to make these savings.”“We want to do it in a way that we have agreement,” he added saying that savings needed to be made “in as balanced a way as possible”.Howlin also ruled out setting any specific deadline for reaching an agreement with unions, adding: “There is no date in my head that is immutable.”Additional reporting by Gavan ReillyRead: Health unions in new public pay talks as Croke Park cuts are tweakedMore: EU will inspect Ireland’s finances for decades after bailout, under new rules read more
There’s been a 96% drop in EU nurses going to work in the UK since Brexit Last July, 1,304 nurses from the EU registered in the UK but only 46 registered this April. http://jrnl.ie/3439767 NEW FIGURES FROM the UK have shown a drastic reduction in the number of nurses from other countries in the EU registering to work in Britain. In July of last year, 1,304 nurses from the EU registered in Britain. That number had fallen drastically to 344 just two months later in September. In April, just 46 EU nurse registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). To become a practising nurse or midwife in the UK, you must register with the NMC.The figures were released to the Health Foundation under a Freedom of Information request. The UK has repeatedly faces staff shortages in the nursing sector, and has recruited from Europe and further afield to plug the gap.Around 57,000 EU nationals work in the NHS in the UK, with nurses accounting for 20,000 of these.Anita Charlesworth, director of research and economics at the Health Foundation, said: “The recruitment and retention of nurses is one of the biggest challenges facing health and social care, with a shortage of 30,000 nurses in England alone. The drop in EU nurses registering to work in the UK could not be more stark – just 46 registered to work in the UK in April. Without EU nurses it will be even harder for the NHS and other employers to find the staff they need to provide safe patient care. The findings should be a wake-up call to politicians and health service leaders.Recruitment and retention of nurses has been a problem in Ireland’s health service also with the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) warning earlier this year that nearly 2,000 skilled nursing staff leave the country each year.INMO General Secretary Liam Doran also told TheJournal.ie in January that Irish nurses are sought after abroad and that the UK is usually an attractive proposition.“In the UK, for example, they’re offering at least the same pay, bonuses are better, working hours are better, so are the staff levels,” Doran added.Last month, Health Minister Simon Harris gave a commitment that student nurses and midwives would be offered full-time contracts after they graduated.Harris said that he had “heard loud and clear from your union that we are only going to succeed if we attach the kind of priority to recruitment and retention that has never been seen before and that is exactly what we are doing”.The Minister added that these weren’t simply “soothing political words”.Read: ‘Sick and tired’: Why Ireland’s’ nurses are leaving in their drovesRead: Simon Harris commits to giving graduating Irish student nurses full-time contracts 31 Comments Jun 12th 2017, 1:58 PM Image: Peter Byrne/PA Wire By Sean Murray Short URL Share28 Tweet Email3 Monday 12 Jun 2017, 1:58 PM As the clock ticks down, get all the best Brexit news and analysis in your inbox: 13,073 Views Image: Peter Byrne/PA Wire Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article read more
Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Athens played down concern at the news that US President Barack Obama intends to visit Turkey and not Greece in the near future, as Greek diplomats stepped up efforts to secure a meeting between the American leader and Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.“Greece has no reason to follow the dead-end logic of out-and-out competition with other countries,” said government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros. It has been traditional for US presidents who want to visit Ankara to hold meetings in Athens as well.In response to Obama’s Turkey trip, Greek diplomats are now pushing for Obama to hold talks with Karamanlis at the sidelines of a NATO summit in April. However, diplomatic sources indicated that even if the meeting does take place, it will not be as wide ranging or as substantial as the talks that Obama is likely to have with Turkish officials. Athens is also concerned that the US president’s visit to Turkey will help elevate its status as a regional power. read more
Islamabad: UN-proscribed terrorist Hafiz Saeed was held guilty by a court in Pakistan’s Gujranwala, according to Pakistani media. Saeed’s case has been shifted to Pakistan’s Gujrat, the reports added. The 26/11 terror attack mastermind was arrested by Pakistani authorities on July 17 over charges related to terror financing and was sent to seven days in judicial custody, which was later extended by 14 days – on July 24. The court had directed the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) to present a complete chargesheet of the case against Hafiz by August 7, according to Geo News. On July 3, the top 13 leaders of the banned Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD), including Saeed and Naib Emir Abdul Rehman Makki, were booked in nearly two dozen cases related to terror financing and money laundering under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997. read more

Among the victims was Clementa Pinckney, the church’s pastor and Jennifer’s husband. She and her daughter heard the shots, barricaded the door and hid under a desk in a secretary’s office, according to her testimony during the penalty phase of Roof’s trial.“Be quiet. Don’t say anything,” she told her daughter. The two survived.Roof was eventually sentenced to death. In the years since the attack at Emanuel AME, Pinckney has worked hard to pick up the pieces and to give her daughters a sense of a normal life. She was recently in Atlanta, where her daughters were taking part in a dance competition, and sat down for an interview with RNS.It has been almost four years since the tragic events of the Charleston shooting. Can you take us back to the day it happened and what you experienced? In the beginning, you’re in denial. You don’t always register when things happen. Especially as traumatic as the Charleston shooting. You just kind of think to yourself, “Did this happen to me?”To be honest, at first, I was a little in denial that it really happened at all. I can tell you that I immediately went into mom mode to protect and be there for my two girls, which was and still is my first priority. I can remember getting home that night and seeing police cars everywhere in our yard and allowing my girls to briefly look out the window as I tried to explain to them the reality of what had happened.Jennifer Pinckney, widow of the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney, speaks during a Feb. 9, 2016, event at Duke University on the violence that targeted Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C. Photo courtesy of Megan Mendenhall, Duke UniversityHow are you and the kids doing? We have our good and bad days. We are living in Columbia, S.C. I’m adjusting to being a single parent, and the girls are doing well in school and enjoying participating in dance competitions, which they have been involved in since they were little girls. When did it become real to you that your husband was gone?Because he traveled a lot it was easy for me to think that he would be coming home, so at first, it was like he was gone on a trip. It wasn’t until they brought his car home that it became real to me. I can remember sitting in his car and crying. That’s when it became real for me. There have been other moments, but I can remember that one vividly. Are there any other emotions that you had to deal with after your husband was murdered? There are just different little things I went through, like when I’d go into his closet, the bedroom, the bathroom, I never moved his pajamas that he had left out. Even when I’m looking at my girls, sometimes I can see him in them. There has been so much said about your husband, who was he to you?The Rev. Clementa Pinckney’s wife, Jennifer Pinckney, top right, sits with her daughters, Eliana, right, and Malana, left in pink sweater, during services honoring his life, on June 26, 2015, in Charleston, S.C., at the College of Charleston TD Arena. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)There are many people who think they knew him, but they don’t, which is one of the hardest things that I have to deal with.Clementa was so relatable to whoever he would meet. He was a tall man, so when he would talk to the girls, he would kneel down to their level to speak to them. He was a calm man. Even when he served in the state Senate, his colleagues would say he would hear both sides and would remain calm in listening. One of his favorite sayings was “Have you thought about it this way?” He was truly an attentive man. As busy as he was, Sunday was our time as a family. He would intentionally block that time off for us even after preaching on Sundays. What type of pastor was he?I can still remember his sermons. In fact, after his death, I went back and listened to some of them. Although I was in the room when he preached them, listening to them again ministered to me. His sermons felt like he was ministering to me from his grave. His sermons have ministered to me through some tough moments in my life.A lot has changed in America the last three years; what are your thoughts?(Deep breath) Yeah, a lot has changed, which is why I think much prayer is needed. What is your life like today? After the incident took place there were lots of people around, and the phone was constantly ringing, then after a while, everything just stops and people move on. I’m a mom first, and raising my two girls is my first priority in life. I want to make sure that I do that role well. How do you raise two girls, whose father was killed because of a hate crime? You know, I try to teach them just because someone may not like you, you have to go beyond that. You’re always going to run into difficult situations and different kinds of people, and you have to get beyond that person’s ignorance. What would you like for people to remember about your husband? That he loved God, he loved and respected everyone. It’s also important to note that no matter how busy he got, the girls and I came first. He would always take time for us. Clementa would hear everyone’s point of view. Many of his colleagues called him one of the most peaceful people that they knew.Do you sometimes ask yourself why this didn’t happen to someone else?I don’t because it shouldn’t happen to anyone else. How have you handled the pressure of being in the public eye? Before the tragedy, most people didn’t even really recognize me. When the tragedy happened and the media started coming around and started coming to my house, I had to go into protection mode to make sure that my girls were cared for.I’m a mother first. A series of drawings by radiologist James Chang, M.D., depicts the digital bombardment that he and his colleagues face daily. According to his website (www.poormd.com), Chang, who works with Radiology Imaging Associates of Englewood, Colo., loves to draw. More of his drawings can be found at www.facebook.com/poormd. Published with permission from James Chang.Years ago in Vegas I came face-to-face with the strain of radiology. On-site, at an imaging practice built around managed care, I sat from 9 in the morning until 7 that night observing (as unobtrusively as possible) a radiologist. At day’s end he retreated to his office, dragging me with him for a recap of the day, his eyes puffy and bloodshot.Decades later I am beginning to feel a little of what that radiologist and others today must go through. WaxingClintonesque: I feel your strain. Thanks to expanded RAM, low-cost flat screens and the wizardry of modern telecommunications, I simultaneously operate three desktop monitors, two tablets and a synched cell phone. Driven by beeps and dings, my eyes flit from one to the other, to my keyboard, to paper and, for a break, to my digital photo frame. Typically by noon I am gingerly scraping precipitate from the corners of my eyes with the thumb and middle finger of my left hand.Doing so provides a strange sense of accomplishment, like pulling the crumbled remnants of a leaf from the windshield wiper that was streaking more than clearing moisture from my windshield. It should help, I think … but the Cleveland Clinic doesn’t say so. Instead the “Family Health Team” opines1 that I should:Adjust my viewing angle (the center of the monitor, tablet or phone should be 20 to 28 inches from my eyes and four to five inches below eye level); Reduce glare (too little contrast between letters and background or glare on the screen makes my eyes work harder); Rest my eyes (every 20 minutes, look away from my computer and at a distant object for 20 seconds); Blink (people normally blink about 18 times a minute, but computer users tend to blink only four to five); andGet my eyes checked (uncorrected vision problems can contribute to eyestrain and musculoskeletal pain). The attention “computer vision syndrome” (CVS) has received (albeit limited) has come mostly from the growth of consumer electronics rather than the decades of digital reading endured by radiologists. Research into this problem from the radiologist’s perspective is sparse, but unsettling. In 2009 investigators from the University of Maryland and Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, found a statistically significant difference in visual acuity among radiologists that changed from morning to other times of the day.2 They concluded that the effect “was relatively modest and within previously published ranges of variability for similar visual acuity tests.” Another study however, published that same year, found that radiologists’ eyestrain may have a more profound effect. Researchers at the Universities of Arizona and Iowa concluded that “because diagnostic image interpretation is performed at near viewing distances, (the) inability to maintain focus on the image could impact diagnostic accuracy.”Other than these two articles, information about eyestrain and its effects on radiologists and their performance is hard to find. Knowing the danger signs of CVS, at least, is a step in the right direction. Here are a few, according to WedMD:4Blurred visionDouble visionDry, red eyesEye irritationHeadachesNeck or back painDespite increasing radiology workloads in recent years, remarkably, there has been a dearth of research into the effects of eye fatigue on radiologists … just as there has been little attention paid to alleviating this strain. The need to look more closely at CVS, for radiologists as well as the increasingly digitally obsessed consumer, should be obvious.Greg Freiherr has reported on developments in radiology since 1983.
