UEFA Champions League Barcelona’s new Dani Alves: How Jordi Alba became Messi’s new main man Ben Hayward Last updated 1 year ago 17:10 12/5/17 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(2) Getty Images UEFA Champions League Lionel Messi Barcelona v Sporting CP Barcelona Sporting CP Opinion The Spain left-back has struck up a great understanding with the Argentine in 2017-18 which is reminiscent of the forward’s link-up with the Brazilian Lionel Messi has a new assistant. For so many years, the Argentine’s association with Dani Alves was a big feature of Barcelona’s play. This season, however, he has found an ally on the other side: Jordi Alba.Alves left Barca in the summer of 2016 after eight seasons at Camp Nou, but the Brazilian (who is now at Paris Saint-Germain) remains the player with the most assists for Messi at the Catalan club (42).For much of that time, Messi operated down the right and it was on that flank where he and Alves built up a memorable rapport, which carried on even when the Argentine moved into a central role. And the two men would warm up together before games in a routine which became a favourite for fans arriving early. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player Over on the other wing, Alba’s role has always been to attack as well as defend. The Spain full-back was signed by Barca (where he had come through the youth system years earlier) from Valencia and his forays down the left are a weapon for both club and country. This season, though, Alba is more of a protagonist than usual. The 28-year-old has more assists than any other Barca player in La Liga (five) and four of those have been for Messi. The other one was against Celta on Saturday, when the two men combined to set up Luis Suarez for their side’s second in the 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo.In the previous round of the Primera Division, Messi also picked out Alba’s advanced run down the left and the Catalan produced a fine finish on the volley to secure a point for Ernesto Valverde’s side at Mestalla.Prior to that goal, Alba had only been assisted twice previously by Messi: against Elche in the Copa del Rey in 2015 and versus Sevilla in the final of the cup competition at the Vicente Calderon in 2016.In the meantime, the left-back had provided only six assists for the Argentine before the current campaign, all of those in La Liga. And the last of those was a very significant one indeed as it led to Messi’s last-gasp winner at the Santiago Bernabeu in a memorable 3-2 victory over Real Madrid last April.Neymar missed that match through suspension and the Brazilian left Barca over the summer to join Paris Saint-Germain. In his absence, Alba is afforded extra space to attack down the left – especially with Barca playing 4-4-2 much of the time this season and summer signing Ousmane Dembele currently sidelined.”Neymar is a great player, but due to circumstances or feelings, he decided to leave in the end,” Alba said last month. “But I am thrilled with the players we have here. I have more of the wing to attack [now]. Honestly, for me it is much better.”Alba is also happy to be working with Valverde following friction with Luis Enrique when he was left out of the team for a run of games last season and he said: “I am delighted with him. His communication with the players is excellent and that helps us to all play together as one.”However, part of collective success includes individual brilliance and also little link-ups and partnerships all over the pitch, like his with Messi.”To build an understanding with the best player in the world is easy,” Alba said. “His profile with his left foot is good for me. Ever since I arrived, we have looked for each other [on the pitch]. It’s a privilege to play with him and let’s hope there are many more passes and connections.”For his part, Valverde said of the pair’s link-up: “Jordi is a player who reads the space and Messi has a peripheral vision that is out of the ordinary, to be able to find him with the ball when he gets into position. We are taking advantage of them and it is one of our strengths.”He is right about that and Alba’s attacking qualities have helped Messi and the team to create and also score goals this season. So while Neymar and Alves may both be at Paris Saint-Germain, Messi has another main man these days – and Barcelona, leading La Liga and unbeaten in the Champions League, are doing just fine.

New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has rescued a 16 years old girl from Holambi Kalan in Delhi who was trafficked from Assam and was forced into prostitution.According to DCW, the girl’s parents had died several years back and she had been living with her two sisters in Assam. Over nine months back, a person known to the elder sister lured them to come to Delhi with the promise of a high paying job in a cup manufacturing company. The women commission further stated that they came to Delhi and started staying with the same person and his wife at his residence. Three days later, the girls were informed that they will have to work as prostitutes in Delhi and shall have to sleep with multiple men. When they protested, they were attacked with blades and were not given food for several days. Soon men started coming and raping them over and over again and they were forced into prostitution.

VICTORIA, B.C. – The B.C. Coroners Service has released data that shows that motor vehicle fatalities are preventable.According to the most recent data published, a lack of restraint use, along with drug and/or alcohol involvement, was noted as a contributory factor to recent MVI deaths in British Columbia.Coroners Service released the updated data in its report, ‘Motor Vehicle Incident Deaths – 2008-2018’. The data shows that there were 314 motor vehicle deaths in B.C. in 2018, up from 299 in 2017, yet still below the annual average of 326 per year during the past decade. The Coroners Service also updated its motorcycle-involved fatality report, which captures a rise in deaths involving motorcyclists. In 2018, 16 percent of the 314 deaths involved motorcycles or mopeds. In 2018 alone, there were 51 motorcyclist deaths. This is the highest annual total for the past decade and a 50 percent increase over 2017.More information on the report can be found on the Government of B.C.’s website.
Washington DC: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday hoped that India will not be the “economic lifeline” to the “authoritarian” regime of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by purchasing oil from the Latin American country. Pompep’s comments came as Washington ramps up actions on Maduro’s regime, which is battling to hold onto power in the face of heavy domestic and international pressure. Venezuela is the third largest supplier of oil to India which is the world’s third-biggest oil consumer. Also Read – Maruti cuts production for 8th straight month in SepThe issue was discussed in a meeting with the visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale, Pompeo told reporters at a news conference here, without providing insight into it. “We are asking the same thing of India as we are of every country: Do not be the economic lifeline for the Maduro regime. So we talked about (Venezuela) I certainly won’t characterise the conversations; they’re private conversations,” Pompeo said in response to a question. Also Read – Ensure strict implementation on ban of import of e-cigarettes: revenue to Customs”In the same way that India has been incredibly supportive of our efforts in Iran, I’m confident that they too understand the real threat to the Venezuelan people. We had a good conversation around that,” Pompeo said. The Latin American country’s Oil Minister and state-run oil company PDVSA’s President Manuel Quevedo told reporters in Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh last month that his sanctions-hit country wants to sell more crude oil to India. The US has slapped sweeping sanctions on PDVSA with a view to curb Venezuela’s crude exports and put pressure on socialist President Maduro to step down. Venezuela produces around 1.57 million barrels of oil per day, half of what it produced two decades back. With the US stopping imports from Venezuela, PDVSA is seeking to retain buyers in other big consuming countries such as China and India. At the news conference, Pompeo said the nations that support Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro are, by the nature of this “illegitimate” regime, carrying out the very foreign interventionism of which they accuse others. “Today, the United States is drawing a clear line between those who aid the forces of repression and those who give life to the Venezuelan people’s democratic dreams. There is no ambiguity here about the truth,” he said. Similar kind of warning to other nations was issued by US National Security Adviser John Bolton. “The United States will not stand idly by while foreign financial institutions facilitate illegitimate transactions that benefit Maduro and his cronies, and perpetuate the corruption that has devastated Venezuela,” he said. Earlier in the day, the Treasury sanctioned a Russia-based bank attempting to circumvent US sanctions on Venezuela’s state-owned oil company PDVSA. It sanctioned Evrofinance Mosnarbank, a Moscow-based bank jointly owned by Russia and Venezuela, for being involved in facilitating illegitimate transactions that prolong Maduro’s usurpation of democracy, it said. “The illegitimate Maduro regime has profited off of the suffering of the Venezuelan people,” said US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
Jakarta- US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Asia’s largest mosque in Jakarta on Sunday during his visit to Indonesia, paying tribute to Islam in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation.According to AFP, after the top US diplomat removed his shoes outside the Istiqlal mosque in the heart of Jakarta, he took a 20-minute tour through the vast building and was accompanied by grand imam Kyai al-Hajj Ali Mustafa Yaqub. The same source explained that the Obama administration is attempting to repair the frayed relations between the United States and Muslims around the globe since the 2003 Iraq invasion. “We are all connected to the same God and the same faith. Abraham connects us all in the love of our neighbor and the honor of the same God. May peace be upon you,” John Kerry wrote in the guest book of the mosque.Indonesia, the world’s third largest democracy, has often been considered the “bridge” between the West and the Muslim world. Ninety percent of Indonesia’s 250 million people identify themselves as Muslims, and most of them practice a moderate form of Islam.US president Barack Obama, who spent part of his childhood in Jakarta, also visited the mosque in 2010 when he travelled to the country. The Istiqlal Mosque, commissioned in 1961, lies in the heart of Jakarta. It serves as a reminder of Indonesia’s struggle for national independence and hosts over 130,000 prayers during Ramadan. With agencies
17 December 2010The United Nations ramped up its efforts to resolve the violent post-electoral crisis in Côte d’Ivoire today, demanding that outgoing President Laurent Gbagbo step down in the face of opposition leader Alassane Ouattara’s clear victory and intensifying its contacts with African leaders. At the start of an end-of-year news conference in New York, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that the situation had taken “a dangerous turn” with at least a dozen people killed in the divided West African country, where the UN has fielded a 9,000-strong peacekeeping mission since 2003 in efforts to help reunification.“The results of the election are known,” he said of the polls, which were meant to be a culminating step in reuniting the country that was split by civil war in 2002 into a Government-controlled south and a rebel-held north. “There was a clear winner. There is no other option. The efforts of Laurent Gbagbo and his supporters to retain power and flout the public will cannot be allowed to stand.“I call on him to step down and allow his elected successor to assume office without further hindrance. The international community must send this message loud and clear. Any other outcome would make a mockery of democracy and the rule of law.”Mr. Ban warned against any moves against the Golf hotel in Abidjan, the commercial capital of the world’s largest cocoa producer, where Mr. Ouattara has taken up residence in the face of Mr. Gbagbo’s refusal to leave the presidential palace and UN peacekeepers are stationed. “Let me say clearly and directly: any attempt to obstruct UN operations or blockade the Golf Hotel is totally unacceptable,” he said. “Any attack on UN forces will be an attack on the international community. I emphasize: those responsible for the loss of civilian lives will be held accountable. In these circumstances, it is crucial for both parties to avoid provocations or a further escalation of violence.”On the ground in Abidjan, Mr. Ban’s Special Representative Y. J. Choi conferred with African Union (AU) Commission Chairman Jean Ping on ways to resolve the crisis. It was the latest in a series of regional and transcontinental meetings he has held to ensure that “the will of the Ivorian people as expressed on 28 November” is respected, the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) said in a news release. The AU, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the European Union (EU), as well as many individual countries, have all recognized Mr. Ouattara as the rightful victor of the run-off election. The Security Council yesterday condemned “in the strongest terms” the post-electoral violence, including reported gunfire near the Golf Hotel and warned all sides that they will be held accountable and brought to justice for attacks against civilians. In a press statement the 15-member body welcomed AU and ECOWAS efforts and those of the countries in the region to assist in preserving peace and stability in Côte d’Ivoire.Cote

On Tuesday night, Familia closed out the back end of New York’s doubleheader split against the St. Louis Cardinals for his 36th save of the 2016 season, the most in the majors. Toss out those pesky postseason stats, and Familia has successfully preserved Mets victories in 52 consecutive save opportunities, stretching back nearly a full calendar year — the third-longest streak in major league history. But as any Mets fan can tell you, the sailing is not always smooth with Familia. Underneath his unblemished saves mark, Familia’s control can be erratic; the 3.4 walks he’s allowing per nine innings ranks 11th-worst among regular closers this season. As a result, he frequently pitches his way into varying degrees of peril before bearing down and escaping with a save.To put Familia’s — and other closers’ — habit of pitching dangerously into perspective, I compiled what I’m calling the “heart-attack index” for relief pitchers. One of the core concepts is leverage index: how important any moment of a game is (relative to average) based on how much it could potentially swing each team’s probability of winning. On average this season, Familia has entered the game when the leverage index is 1.71,1Through Monday, so this doesn’t include Tuesday’s games — nor do the rest of the numbers in this article. which means these moments are about 70 percent more important than a typical at-bat. In the average Familia outing, that number balloons to 3.08 at its peak, meaning the pressure ratchets up more per appearance for Familia than it does for any other qualified2According to FanGraphs’ relief-pitching leaderboard. closer in the game: Jonathan Papelbon1751.692.68+0.98 Brad Ziegler2131.682.88+1.21 Jeanmar Gomez2151.852.82+0.96 Francisco Rodriguez1831.692.41+0.72 Santiago Casilla18102.273.51+1.24 Kevin Jepsen1191.552.19+0.63 Arodys Vizcaino1761.482.43+0.95 Steve Cishek1972.003.19+1.19 Fernando Rodney1741.522.12+0.60 Sam Dyson2331.832.78+0.95 Tony Cingrani1791.582.35+0.77 Unsurprisingly, there’s Familia again on the top left, losing more win probability than any other qualified reliever before the pressure-valve alarms start to buzz, only to also gain the most win probability afterward as he brings the team back from the brink of a meltdown. (To some extent this is circular — Andrew Miller of the Yankees, for instance, seldom pitches himself into enough trouble to rack up huge win probability credit on the other side of max leverage — but that’s also kind of the point.)Other relievers, such as deposed Chicago Cubs closer Hector Rondon, pitch into nearly as much trouble as Familia but aren’t as skilled at extricating themselves from danger. (Which might help explain why the Cubs on Monday dealt for Aroldis Chapman, who gets into considerably less trouble on the mound than Familia but pitches well when in a jam.)In Familia’s case, it’s fair to ask how much of this high-wire act is repeatable: Surely his save streak will eventually end if he keeps pitching so dangerously, right? Well, maybe. WPA isn’t a very predictive statistic because of the large weight it places on high-leverage situations; if a player performs above his usual level in important moments, it’s unlikely to hold up for very long. But by the same token, Familia isn’t a bad pitcher who just happens to have pitched great under pressure — putting leverage-based metrics aside, he also ranks eighth among qualified closers in fielding independent pitching, despite the shaky walk rate. (It’s also worth noting that Familia’s signature pitch, the sinker, tends to either miss low in the zone — hence the walks — or induce ground balls, which often double up base runners who walked to first.)Familia may not be the best closer in baseball, and his save streak is destined to end sooner or later. But a pulse-pumping pitching style isn’t automatically a bad thing — provided fans’ hearts can take the drama while they watch from the couch. David Robertson2361.762.86+1.10 A.J. Bundled in winter coats, hats and scarfs, children sat on their parents’ shoulders and peered around the corner, waiting. Finally, the shouts began, at about 11:10 a.m. Saturday to be exact: “Here it comes!” Santa’s steam train rolled into Vancouver amid cheers from 2,100 onlookers.Santa waved to families as the vintage SP&S 700 locomotive, decked out in decorations and lights, arrived at the Vancouver Amtrak station. It was followed by a large cloud of steam and the sounding of the horn.Santa then exited the train, shaking children’s hands before being whisked into a nearby heated tent. There, he greeted the hundreds of children individually, who were waiting in line for pictures with Santa. They were also rewarded with free candy, cake and hot beverages. On a morning when the thermometer barely passed freezing, the enthusiastic crowd came out in full force. With more than 2,000 in attendance, Saturday was a record day for the annual event sponsored by BNSF Railway, said railway spokesman Gus Melonas. The SP&S 700 hasn’t appeared in Vancouver for three years, though other locomotive stand-ins have been used for the holiday event.
Phil Arnold definitely left his mark on the Vancouver area. For more than 60 years, Arnold created maps that illustrated the growth of Clark County.Arnold, 96, died Saturday at the Hough neighborhood home he shared with his wife, Helen, for almost 71 years. It was a home that doubled as a business office for Arnold Map Service. For a segment filmed by Seattle’s King TV when Phil Arnold was 85, visithttp://www.king5.com/on-tv/evening-magazine/Map-maker-114724234.htmlThe maps were sold downstairs; Arnold’s mapmaking office was upstairs. That’s where he carefully inked every new road, drew every new school and lettered the name of every new street that filled in the county’s cartographic blanks. He did it all by hand, long after most people choose to — or are forced to — call it a career.“He had cataract surgery after his 90th birthday,” Janice Arnold said. “His eyes were so critical.”In addition to his keen eyes, “What was so incredibly amazing was his steady hand. He could draw these tiny things: really amazing,” she said.He is survived by Helen, their sons, Phil Jr. and Dean, and daughter Janice. Phil Jr. and his wife, Kathy, have been operating the business for the past few years and will continue to sell Arnold’s maps.Arnold’s old-school craftsmanship got a nod from Gov. Chris Gregoire a few days after he turned 90 on Oct. 27, 2005. The Arnolds visited her Olympia office, where Gregoire issued a proclamation describing him as “most likely the oldest working cartographer in the world.”
