Nimbaians Yearn for Ebola Treatment Center, Other Things

first_imgCitizens of Nimba have called on their government and its international partners, including WHO, to set up an Ebola testing center in that county, as the deadly Ebola virus rages on there. The Nimba citizens’ calls were made on a community radio talk show in Saclepea. They think that once this is done, the further spread of the disease would be curtailed and it would also minimize casualties, as most patients are brought down to Monrovia for treatment. They argued that if a center with all facilities, including testing, is created in Nimba, especially Ganta, it would be very quick and easy to get someone treated and stop the virus from spreading to another person.Since the outbreak, over 75 persons had died in Nimba County with most of the victims coming Ganta.Nearly all the suspected, probable and confirmed cases had been kept in their homes in the community they lived,  something that is causing terrible frustration among the citizens. The holding site in Ganta is yet to be completed, over a  month since work started on it, at the Ganta United Methodist Hospital’s eye clinic.Over the weekend, suspected Ebola patients as well as bodies of victims have been littering the streets of Ganta,  owing to the lack of facilities  to host them and protected people to bury the bodies. “We learned from the awareness team that Ebola can be cured if the person starts  immediate treatment, but how can the person get cured if it takes days or a week before the person is tested and transferred,” asked Menkalo Zuo, one of the callers.Recently, the Nimba County Authority disburses US$100, 000 from the County Development Funds for the procurement of motorbikes for local authorities to speed up the awareness within their districts of control, while some portions of the funding were given to township commissioners, district commissioners, city mayors as well as media houses to speed up the sensitization process throughout the county.  But  the callers argued that  the authorities were long on sensitization short on  responses and treatment of those affected. In the latest development, the virus over the weekend claimed the lives of an ambulance driver of the Saclepea Comprehensive Health Center and the Principal of Faith Academy High School in Ganta; while on last Tuesday morning, September 9, 2014 one of the Catholic classroom teachers identified as Alfred Slelikpo died from what was  believed to a probable Ebola Case. The lack of a center in Ganta is posing problems for the local authority.  On that same  Tuesday morning, a very sick man who was believed to have travelled from Bassa was seen  lying in the Palava Hut at the Ganta City Mayor’s office. He was said to have arrived in  an unknown car when he was rejected in the town called Bayleglay, where he had earlier gone to seek herbs.“If there were available treatment, this man would not have been lying here like this,” said the City Mayor Cooper.Although, his family was making some efforts to take him somewhere until the arrival of the medical team, up to press time he was still lying helplessly in the palava hut.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Companies like Stabroek TV Inc would benefit from the copyright legislation

first_imgDear Editor,Stabroek News’ editorial on Monday, October 29, 2018, provided for interesting reading, more so given that some arguments proffered were not contextually based, not fully at least. The editorial, in stressing the need for copyright legislation, took issue with comments made by former President, Bharrat Jagdeo, and raised several points. The former president is quoted to have said: “We are a poor developing country. Wait until such time in the future when people can afford to pay for the copyrighted stuff. That is how I see it. It may not sound like the most enlightened position given that you have international treaties and stuff but half of those treaties don’t protect us small countries. They don’t protect our interests”.One, the editorial talks about photocopied text books and the need for copyright legislation to stop this practice. I have a simple question for the author of that editorial, when one text book costs thousands of dollars and many low-income families survive on a minimum of $15,000 a week, how are people sending their children to school? I would vote for a government that reduces burdens on families trying to make a better life for their children, over one that would do the opposite, any day. Already the $10,000 cash grant to help with transportation for children has been taken away and in total that was about $1.6 billion a year. So how can the former president be wrong when he advocates for a delay in passing copyright legislation until people can afford to pay for the copyrighted stuff? Two, Stabroek News states that the under the former President’s tenure “Guyana’s development languished and the country” and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is to be blamed for economy’s performance. Editor, most all of Guyana is aware of the fact that Guyana’s economy under the Jagdeo presidency saw consistent economic growth and saw Guyana being one of the fastest growing economies in the Caribbean. Also, it was under a PPP government that Guyana was reclassified from being a Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) country.Three, Stabroek News argues that the absence of copyright legislation will undermine international commitments, for example under the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). However, as I said earlier, the arguments raised are not completely grounded in the context of real time occurrences. Legislation does not guarantee compliance by countries that sign onto treaties. As recent as June 2018, Antigua and Barbuda was still battling with the United States of America (USA) to have it comply with a World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruling. Antigua and Barbuda went to the WTO in 2003 and eventually won the right to compensation of $21 million annually after the WTO judges upheld its complaint that USA laws were discriminatory. The USA has not paid and Antigua and Barbuda have lost $315 million so far, equivalent to more than a quarter of its annual GDP and less than 0.1 per cent of the U.S. economy, according to a Reuters report on June 22, 2018.Four, the editorial said that the former president is “rushing to the aid of the same oligarchs” who would be in immediate jeopardy once legislation is updated. Who are the oligarchs? Are the schoolchildren, the hundreds of thousands of Guyanese who will be affected and the small vendors the oligarchs that Stabroek News is referring to?The only oligarch here seems to be Stabroek TV Inc., which has a monopoly with the distribution of DirecTV. It is companies like Stabroek TV Inc that would benefit once the copyright legislation in place. The cost charged to set this up is a whopping 45,000, plus a monthly fee. How much more will this cost increase once legislation is in place? How much more revenues will the company rake in? So is this argument about some companies being made to pay more? Or about Stabroek TV Inc being able to make more?Fifthly, editor, copyright legislation is not just about the DVDs and music, as the Stabroek News tries to focus on. It is also about software. Has Stabroek News paid monies to Microsoft for using its ‘Word’ and other software, such as the very expensive Adobe Creative Suites? Has Stabroek News paid for its Servers’ operating system, as well as operating systems for users? Has Stabroek News paid for the software, which is used in the press department and needed to allow for the printing of its daily newspaper? Has Stabroek News paid for its anti-virus software? I have to point out that these are not one-off payments that have to be made. Payments for this software are either monthly or yearly subscriptions. There must be an acknowledgement that there are wider impacts to the proposal to implement copyright legislation. Finally, the Stabroek News editorial created the impression that nothing was said by the former president about protecting local content. The former president said clearly: “We should protect the copyrighted material for our local artists.”Sincerely,Kumar Kowlessarlast_img read more

The top 10 free agents Premier League clubs should be looking to sign

first_imgWhy is he a free agent? After leaving Sevilla at the end of the 2016-17 season, the France international was given a six-month ban (later extended to 18) for doping. The ban backdates to July 2017, and he has made seven appearances for Turkish side Antalyaspor since then. He would be able to start training with a new club in November.Who could use him?Blessed with incredible amounts of ability, Nasri still has a lot to give at 31. The former Manchester City man would suit sides that want to keep possession and break down stubborn defences. He has the ability to create something out of nothing, a feat he regularly proved at Arsenal and Manchester City. A club like Newcastle United could benefit from such ingenuity and brilliance, especially since Mike Ashley failed to provide Rafa Benitez with sufficient funds in the transfer market.Would he be a worthwhile signing?Although there is no doubting Nasri’s talent, he has a penchant for causing trouble wherever he goes. His attitude has often been called into question, sources close to the Manchester City camp last season claimed he was a disruptive influence on the club’s pre-season tour of America. 13 The excitement of the summer transfer window has come and gone once again in the Premier League. An earlier deadline day of August 9 meant many clubs got their business done quickly, or not at all (like Tottenham Hotspur). 13 The ex-Arsenal man would arrive with big wage demands, would probably be unfit and has a whole load of baggage behind him – not worth a gamble.Hatem Ben Arfa 13 impact Ben Arfa endured a frustrating time in the French capital Who could use him?Given his Portuguese links, it is no surprise to see Wolverhampton Wanderers linked with a move for the 32-year-old. Although the majority of his 56 caps for his country came from midfield, he can also play as as centre-half or as a left-back. Experiences of two World Cups and two European Championships, as well as multiple Champions League appearances for Sporting Lisbon and Dynamo Kiev mean Veloso could provide invaluable knowledge on the Premier League rookies.Would he be a worthwhile signing?Given his undoubted quality and experience, it would seem as though this deal would be a no-brainer. However, with Veloso never having played in the Premier League, a move for the 32-year-old could be quite a gamble. IN DEMAND While Liverpool and West Ham United splashed the cash, other clubs like Bournemouth were far more conservative in their approach. As always, the option for Premier League clubs to sign free agents remains a distinct possibility, with a host of top stars available for absolutely nothing.Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal have all done exceptionally well from dabbling in the free agent section before, so there is no reason why history cannot repeat itself. So who can your club still sign for nothing, and would they be good value? Check out with our handy guide below on the ten best free signings. REVEALED Sako had his season cut short by injury last time out, so will surely be hungry to get back on the pitch 13 Where every Premier League club needs to strengthen in January How the Premier League table could change after the Boxing Day fixtures Man United joined by three other clubs in race for Erling Haaland Nasri tangles with Manchester United great Paul Scholes Kevin De Bruyne ‘loves Man City and wants to keep winning’, reveals father REVEALED Who could use him?Particularly adept at set-pieces, the 31-year-old would suit a side like Cardiff City who will surely have to rely on scoring from dead-ball situations. His ability to beat a man and get a cross in would surely entice Neil Warnock who is not afraid to go direct to get results. moving on Best clips, calls and talkSPORT moments of 2019, feat Hearn, McCoist and more How the Premier League table could change after the Boxing Day fixtures Would he be a worthwhile signing?Although Marchisio’s best years may be behind him, there is no doubting his quality. Added to that, he has experience of major tournaments and winning multiple Serie A titles. A short-term deal could prove extremely beneficial for a mid-table club.Samir Nasri 13 Nasri has three months left to serve on a doping ban targets Would he be a worthwhile signing? In a word, definitely. Sako’s versatility and threat from a variety of attacking positions make him an ideal Premier League squad player. If a manager were to bring him on with 15 minutes in a tight game, he could definitely prove to be a match winner. Expect him to be snapped up by a club here, or abroad.Diego ReyesWhy is he a free agent? The Mexico international decided to run his contract down with Porto this summer in the hope of finding a new club. The 25-year-old has been courted by several Premier League clubs already, although no formal offer is made. He was due to feature at the World Cup for his country, but failed to add to his 53-cap haul because of a hamstring injury.Who could use him? There are no shortage of clubs in need of defensive reinforcements but, after West Ham United shipped six goals in their opening two Premier League games, Reyes could be brought into the fold. Tottenham predicted XI to face Brighton with Mourinho expected to make big changes targets Upon his return to Monaco, he never really settled and had largely unsuccessful loan periods at CSKA Moscow, Sporting Gijon and Amiens in France.Who could use him?Despite his hulking frame, Traore is not actually the strongest in the air. This would effectively make moves to clubs playing a direct style of play virtually useless. However, he does hold the ball up well and has smart feet. Given their goalscoring problems last season, Southampton boss Mark Hughes could certainly pair Traore alongside new signing Danny Ings for one of the more obvious ‘Little and Large’ partnerships.Would he be a worthwhile signing? At just 28, the striker should be entering his peak years. However, his succession of failed loan moves meant his career has stalled somewhat. A period of consistency could do wonders for his confidence and, given he would have a point to prove after his previous Premier League experience, could work in a club’s favour no end.Miguel Veloso LATEST Why is he a free agent? The Portugal international left Genoa after two seasons with the Serie A side at the end of last season. His second spell at the club was largely successful, playing in a holding midfield position in a 3-5-2 formation. After watching the Italian side sign former Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers man Sandro in the summer, Veloso decided to try his hand elsewhere. NEW ERA Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Ndidi bid, targets named, Ozil is ‘skiving little git’ Toure left City after arriving from Barcelona in 2010 in a big-money move. ALTERED possible standings England’s most successful clubs of the past decade, according to trophies won Why is he a free agent? The former Newcastle United man started to light up Ligue 1 in 2016 with Nice after leaving England, even earning a recall to the France side. His form earned him a move to giants Paris Saint-Germain, but it all soon turned sour. Under new Arsenal boss Unai Emery, the 31-year-old failed to make a single appearance and was duly released.Who could use him?Like Nasri, clubs in need of goals or at least a spark without breaking the bank could be willing to take a punt on the mercurial talent. His dribbling ability is world-class and he has a wand of a left foot. But attitude problems mean he would require a strong-willed manager to get the best out of him. Mark Hughes at Southampton should definitely be keeping an eye out for him, especially since his side managed just 37 goals in the Premier League last season. 13center_img LATEST PREMIER LEAGUE NEWS Tottenham v Brighton LIVE: talkSPORT commentary and team news for Boxing Day opener ALTERED gameday RANKED Every current Premier League club’s best kit from the past decade 13 How Arsenal could line up in Arteta’s first official game in charge – Ozil return? At his age, he can ill-afford to waste any more time and one final stint in the Premier League could truly motivate him. However, there will be questions about his match fitness levels, so a prospective buyer should not expect an instant impact.Bakary SakoWhy is he a free agent? The Mali international was offered a new deal by Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace, but chose to seek a new challenge elsewhere. An ankle injury sustained in January effectively ended his season, although he did manage six goals in 19 appearances up until that point.Who could use him?Blessed with pace and power in abundance, Sako is a nightmare for defenders. At former club Wolverhampton Wanderers, he made a name for himself as a marauding winger, but showed he had the ability to play in a more advanced role for Palace last season. Such versatility and goal-scoring threat could tempt a club like Burnley into making a move, especially with a Europa League campaign to contend with. The 30-year-old would offer a completely different dimension to Sean Dyche’s side. Every Championship club’s best signing of the decade, including Taarabt and Dack The Terriers have suffered two crushing defeats thus far (admittedly against top-class opposition) and are firmly rooted to the bottom of the table. A move for someone like Yacob, with a wealth of Premier League experience, would make a lot of sense.Would he be a worthwhile signing? The former Baggies enforcer has only just turned 31 and would have plenty of miles left in the proverbial tank. Having never relied on pace, Yacob’s reading of the game and clever positioning allow him to stay one step ahead of the opposition.Yaya ToureWhy is he a free agent? After multiple spats with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and a severely limited number of appearances last season, Toure left the Etihad as a hero for his efforts during his eight-year stay in Manchester. With Kevin De Bruyne, Fernandinho, David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and the emerging Phil Foden all preferred by Guardiola, the 35-year-old was released.Who could use him?West Ham United have been linked with a move for the midfielder, although sources within the club have been quick to quash rumours of a move for the Ivory Coast legend.  13 Lacina Traore is a giant on the pitch (pictured against Tottenham in 2016) Where Ancelotti ranks with every Premier League boss for trophies won 13 Claudio MarchisioWhy is he a free agent? The Italy international agreed to end his 25-year affiliation with Juventus earlier this month, having been at the club since the age of seven. After suffering a serious knee injury in 2016, the 32-year-old could only make 20 appearances last season. With the signing of Emre Can from Liverpool being confirmed after the World Cup, Marchisio decided to end his career elsewhere.Who could use him?Everton have reportedly been linked with a move for the Italian, with central midfield being a position they are rather light after Morgan Schneiderlin’s injury. West Ham’s poor start to the season could also see Manuel Pellegrini make a late move in the transfer window. Level-headed and good in possession, Arsenal could do a lot worse than signing the veteran midfielder to help out their young stars. smart causal Good in possession and strong off the ball, Reyes could be a great addition to a Premier League side silverware Dzsudzsak could prove to be a shrewd signing possible standings 13 England’s most successful clubs of the past decade, according to trophies won Top Football Stories Would he be a worthwhile signing?Although there is no doubting his ability, you would have to question Dzsudzsák’s desire. After two lucrative years in the United Arab Emirates, the Hungary international may perhaps struggle to motivate himself for a potential relegation scrap. But, of all the players on this list, his record would suggest he would be best placed to offer something special.Claudio YacobWhy is he a free agent? After enduring one of the most calamitous seasons in Premier League history, West Bromwich Albion had to trim the wage bill drastically. Alongside Yacob, Boaz Myhill and Gareth McAuley were also allowed to leave the Hawthorns ahead of life in the Championship.Who could use him?The Argentine is extremely dependable and operates very efficiently in front of a compact back four. He is the youngest player on this list, so clubs know they are getting a defender not yet in his prime.Balázs DzsudzsákWhy is he a free agent?Dzsudzsák was, at point, considered to be the next big thing to break out of Dutch football. The Hungary international is technically superb with an eye for goal, but his decision to leave PSV Eindhoven for Anzhi Makhachkala left critics dumfounded. Since then, he moved to Dubai-based side Al Wahda and has just run his contract down. After a series of financially motivated moves, a return to top-flight European football surely beckons. Tottenham predicted XI to face Brighton with Mourinho expected to make big changes Tottenham v Brighton LIVE: talkSPORT commentary and team news for Boxing Day opener The former Barca man may no longer be the marauding force he once was, but a club like Everton could certainly make use of his vast experience in their engine room. There is a real disparity in the amount of experience in the Toffees’ midfield ranks, and Toure could be the perfect man to help guide youngsters like Tom Davies.Would he be a worthwhile signing?Although he could still do a job  for the majority of Premier League sides, the problems with Toure are almost completely off the pitch. Agent Dimitri Seluk caused City endless amounts of trouble while his client was at the club. Quite frankly, Toure did little to help the situation and any side looking to sign him would be painfully aware of the risk signing him.Lacina TraoreWhy is he a free agent?Nicknamed ‘The Tree’ for his 6ft 8ins frame, Traore has actually played in the Premier League before. KILLERS OF DONEGAL TEEN LOSE LEGAL FREEDOM BID

first_imgMurdered: LiamTwo men jailed for kicking a Donegal teenager to death have lost a legal bid for freedom.Judges rejected challenges from Sean Cruickshank and Edward McEleney to being found guilty of murdering Liam Devlin in Derry. The 19-year-old victim, from Burnfoot, suffered fatal brain injuries during the attack in the city’s Creggan estate in August 2007.Witnesses said Cruickshank, 24, from Lislane Drive, and Edward McEleney, 25, of Circular Road, both in the city, had kicked and stamped on his head. The men were each sentenced to a minimum 11 years behind bars. Both sought to have their murder convictions overturned.Cruickshank’s lawyers argued that he should have been allowed to give evidence about an earlier assault he carried out on Liam Devlin’s brother. The 24-year-old had confronted and head-butted John Devlin on the same night. It was claimed that if full details of his guilty plea to that assault had been put before the jury it would have strengthened his case that he never intended to kill. But Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan, sitting with Lord Justices Girvan and Coghlin, held that his character was damaged by his behaviour in the earlier incident. He said: “In our view any benefit to Cruickshank from introducing such evidence was at best marginal and did not affect the safety of the conviction.”McEleney’s legal team contended that the length and complexity of the trial judge’s charge to the jury rendered the verdict unsafe.
Sir Declan found that prosecution and defence evidence had been “meticulously examined”.He added: “There may have been some sophisticated language but reading the charge as a whole it was delivered in language that was plainly understandable to any juror.“We conclude, therefore, that this criticism of the charge did not affect the safety of the conviction.”All other arguments were also dismissed.Sir Declan confirmed: “For the reasons given we do not consider that the convictions are unsafe.”KILLERS OF DONEGAL TEEN LOSE LEGAL FREEDOM BID was last modified: October 27th, 2012 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Hundreds of Donegal families cannot afford to lose the services of ParentStop – Donegal Senator

first_imgA Donegal Senator has stated that the hundreds and hundreds of Donegal families who have benefitted from the ParentStop service over the last 13 years, cannot afford to lose it.Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn was appealing to the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone directly during a special debate on the matter in the Seanad today.ParentStop supported over 400 Donegal families last year and has announced that it will have to close its doors at the end of this year, due to an ongoing lack of secure funding resources for the service. Senator Mac Lochlainn said: “This is a vital service for so many families across the county. Established in 2005 from within the community of Donegal and funded from 2007 to date, the team at ParentStop have been a safe space for parents struggling with their responsibilities for a variety of reasons. They are a free and voluntary service operated on a not for profit basis.“It is a self-referral service for families but a range of professionals and officials have referred struggling families to the service including teachers, counsellors, health care and social care professionals as well as family court judges. For years now, they have struggled to find the necessary funding from government agencies to sustain what has been a growing service and they have been forced into this announcement that they will have to close their doors”.“Today I appealed to Minister Zappone to meet with the board of ParentStop and to work with the HSE and other government departments and agencies to find a sustainable funding solution that will keep the doors open. I am pleased that the Minister has confirmed that she will meet the board of ParentStop later this month and that Tusla and the HSE are working on a joint funding proposal. “It is critical now that these efforts succeed and that the hundreds of Donegal families who rely on ParentStop are not abandoned by the state”.Hundreds of Donegal families cannot afford to lose the services of ParentStop – Donegal Senator was last modified: November 5th, 2019 by Shaun KeenanShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Parentstoplast_img read more
