Musa Bility Quits Unity Party

first_imgIt may shock many political observers, yet others might see it as nothing strange when alliances begin to shift and shuffle as an era, such as the two-term rule of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, nears the end. And so it is in the case of businessman Musa Hassan Bility, who served as chair of the ruling Unity Party’s Montserrado committee that successfully concluded with the re-election of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, has decided to part company with the ruling party, less than a year to the 2017 presidential and general elections.Bility, himself a two-term president of the Liberia Football Association (LFA) and one who made history by attempting to run for the presidency of the world football controlling body, FIFA, conveyed to Unity Party National Chairman Wilmot Paye, in a simple letter his decision to quit the party, effective immediately. In a terse statement that did not reveal what may have motivated his movement away from the party, Bility did not mince his words. “I write to inform you of my decision to resign from the UP as of the date this letter,” he said. The letter was delivered Thursday, October 13. Political parties are institutions where people gather with a shared vision and common goal, and Bility could not fail to tell his former chairman how well he much he enjoyed his relationship with the party. “It was a real pleasure to have worked and served over the years and [to] have been a proud member of the team that elected the leadership of the country in two successive elections,” he said in his letter to Chairman Paye. Bility did not reveal his next move but there have been speculations that he was courting or being courted by officials of the Liberty Party, based on sightings of him in Nimba County along with Associate Justice Kabineh Ja’neh. He is yet to confirm his relationship with any political party. However, he showed greater interest in Congress for Democratic Change’s standard bearer, Senator George Manneh Weah, whose senatorial bid Bility supported in December 2014. It was rumored in the corridors of the LFA that Bility supported Weah to get the football legend’s contribution towards the Lone Star national soccer team, making the case for additional financial support to the Liberia Football Association.Until now much has not been heard about additional support to the national team and the LFA has also not announced any dissatisfaction with any lawmaker on their support to the national team, and of course towards the development of football in Liberia in general.Meanwhile, many political observers, having learned of Bility’s decision regarding the Unity Party, have described it as a blow, because for the last eleven years, he has enjoyed a close working relationship with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, winning a place in her heart, according to those close to the president, as one of her confidants, in her avowed determination to lead Liberia from war and ashes to peace and tranquility.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
