first_imgShikhar Dhawan’s thumb injury and the subsequent stint on the sidelines has come as a big blow to India, leaving the team management concerned about the combination ahead of some crunch matches at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.Dhawan was hit on the thumb during his match-winning knock of 117 vs Australia at The Oval in London on Sunday. While Dhawan carried on to make a spectacular hundred after taking the knock as early as the 9th over, it was revealed after the match that the India opener suffered a fracture.Considering the success Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have achieved for India in ICC tournaments, the news of Dhawan’s injury was a cause for concern with several former cricketers conceding it was a setback for Team India.Initial reports suggested a stint on the sidelines for at least 3 weeks putting Dhawan at the risk of being ruled out of World Cup 2019. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed on Tuesday that Dhawan would be put under observation. No replacement has been named yet but Rishabh Pant has been asked to join the World Cup squad in England as a back-up option.As it turns out, Shikhar Dhawan is in a positive frame of mind despite having suffered an injury after a good start to his World Cup 2019 campaign.Dhawan was spotted at India’s training session in Nottingham on Thursday.
