Exclusive – Liverpool have still not replaced Carragher, claims Henchoz

first_imgStephane Henchoz claims Liverpool lack a natural defensive leader – having never replaced Jamie Carragher.Brendan Rodgers tried to strengthen his leaky defence in the summer, after seeing his side concede 50 goals in the Premier League last campaign.Southampton’s Dejan Lovren and Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno both arrived permanently, while Javier Manquillo joined on a two-year loan deal. All three played in the Merseyside derby, but watched on as Everton stopper Phil Jagielka scored a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw. And Henchoz claims Rodgers’ side will continue to ship goals unless they can find a leader at the back in the mould of his former teammate Carragher, who retired in 2013.“One of the main problems as a back four is that they have two new guys playing at full-back, along with Lovren,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show.“Skrtel is the only one who has some experience at Liverpool. They don’t have a natural leader.“Since Jamie Carragher retired, they haven’t had that natural leader at the back. It’s a problem.”And Henchoz added the situation at Liverpool is not helped by Simon Mignolet’s indifferent form.“On top of that they have Mignolet in goal, who’s not had a great start to the season,” he said.“He didn’t have a good time last year either. He’s not a big personality.“It’s difficult to play as a back four when you know the goalkeeper doesn’t have any confidence.”last_img read more
