2011 Predictions: Richard MacManus

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… 2: eBooks will hit 20% market penetration by the end of 2011. In 2010, the Association of American Publishers reported that eBooks made up 9.03% of total consumer book sales – compared to 3.31% at the close of 2009. I’m predicting this growth to rocket in 2011, thanks to a plentiful supply of cheap eReaders and a long overdue price war on eBooks between Amazon, Barnes&Noble and others. I predict it will reach 20%, in other words one in five books in 2011 will be sold as an eBook. If that bold prediction comes true, it will be great news for book consumers and will silence eBook skeptics about the future of eBooks. Disclaimer: I’m not suggesting paper books will go away, just that eBooks become much more popular and utilized.3: Internet of Cars will be the surprise hit of the year. This year we saw further commercialization of services that connect everyday objects to the Internet. In 2011, I predict that cars (not smart homes, smart grids, etc.) will be where the most innovation and mainstream attention happens for Internet of Things technologies. Apps like AutoBot will gain traction over 2011.4: Internet TV tips and gets huge consumer uptake. In 2010 there was a lot of progress in this sector: Apple TV re-design, Google TV, Boxee, Roku, Clicker and other developments. Most of this activity was largely experimental though, in that no one vendor got the formula quite right. For example, the launch problems of Google TV at the end of this year. However in 2011, consumers will flock to these products as they mature and more Internet TV content is made available – particularly in the U.S. market, but hopefully to international markets too. Picking a breakout product is difficult, as each of the main players offers something different. I don’t think there will be a breakout product, although Google has the broadest capabilities and so it has the potential to become one if it gets the product right. I predict that Google won’t dominate this market though; and neither will Apple.5: A major pop music star will do something amazing with web technologies, that blows open the online music scene. Arcade Fire set the scene in 2010, with their experimental collaboration with Google on an HTML5-fueled interactive video. In 2011, I expect an even bigger star – someone innovative like Kanye West or Lady Gaga, or a totally new star – to do something that re-defines what music means online. That could be something new in a live show, a music video, or something completely unexpected. To get more specific, I’ll bet on something that blends a live album with internet technologies – which sells unexpectedly well and thus sets a trend in the music industry.6: Bonus prediction: by the end of 2011, the most viewed YouTube video of all time will no longer be Justin Bieber. Instead it will be a collaboration between an unknown comedian and a breakout new baby. I’m envisaging a combination of comedy tap dancing and baby giggling (perhaps recorded using an auto-tune device). Yes, 2011 will mark the return of viral comedy and laughing babies to the top of the YouTube charts – this time as a duet! Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… richard macmanus Over December we’ve reviewed the top Web products and developments of 2010. Now it’s time to look ahead to 2011. The ReadWriteWeb team is always thinking about what’s next, so in our final series of 2010 we attempt to predict the big stories of 2011. Predictions are of course a tricky business. The braver the predictions, the more risk of them not coming true! Without further ado, here are my predictions for 2011 – 5 serious and 1 not so serious.1: Flipboard becomes the breakout news reading app of 2011. With its latest round of updates in December, Flipboard introduced Google Reader and made some significant changes to sharing and navigation. I expect Flipboard to introduce more such upgrades in 2011 and begin to expand to other devices than the iPad. These moves will push Flipboard into becoming a very popular app to browse, curate and share news each day. It won’t usurp Google Reader for curating and sharing activities, simply because Google Reader can be used on the PC. However for mobile surfing, which will be an increasingly important way to browse news in 2011, Flipboard will rule in curating and sharing of media.ReadWriteWeb’s 2011 Predictions:2011 Staff Predictions2011 Predictions: Klint Finley2011 Predictions: Curt Hopkins2011 Predictions: Sarah Perez2011 Predictions: Mike Melanson Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Related Posts Tags:#predictions#web last_img read more

How furious Bayern chief incredibly sold Bernat after one bad game

first_imgBayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has revealed that he decided to sell Juan Bernat after the player’s poor performance in the Champions League quarter-final first leg last season. The left-back made the switch to PSG in the summer after having spent four years with the Bundesliga giants having initially signed for the club from Valencia in 2014.And the reasons behind Bayern making the decision to move the Spaniard on have now been disclosed, with president Hoeness having seen enough in one particular game to convince him to get rid. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Man Utd ready to spend big on Sancho and Haaland in January Who is Marcus Thuram? Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! It all centres around Bernat’s performance in Bayern’s 2-1 win over Sevilla in the Champions League back in April. With the first leg taking place in Spain, Bernat was partly responsible for the hosts’ first goal, as Pablo Sarabia shrugged off a challenge from the defender before smashing home past Sven Ulreich.Bayern did recover courtesy of a Jesus Navas own goal and one from Thiago Alcantara, although Bernat was subsequently hooked at half-time in place of Rafinha. The Bavarians eventually went on to win the tie 2-1 on aggregate after a 0-0 second-leg draw, but Bernat would only play for the club four more times after that, before being sold to PSG in a €15 million (£13m/$17m) deal. And discussing the sale, Hoeness revealed to reporters in an explosive press conference on Friday: “When we played in Seville, he was solely responsible for us almost being eliminated.”That day [the Champions League first leg against Sevilla], we decided that we would sell him because he almost cost us all the success in the Champions League.”In what was a heated exchange with the gathered media, Bayern also backed their manager Niko Kovac despite a run of four matches without a win in all competitions. That form had seen former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger linked with the post, but the club’s chiefs, including Hoeness, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic have stood by the Croatian.Next up for Bayern is an away trip to Wolfsburg as they look to halt their recent slump, with Kovac’s side, who are currently sixth in the table, looking to close the gap on current leaders Dortmund.last_img read more

Bob Huggins’ Daughters Tweeted Rape Jokes About Maryland’s Dez Wells Sunday Night

first_imgBob Huggins's daughter tweets about Dez Wells.Maryland and West Virginia rarely play each other in basketball, so there isn’t much of a rivalry between the two programs that border each other. After Sunday night’s NCAA Tournament Third Round game, though, maybe one is going to heat up. The No. 5-seeded Mountaineers defeated the No. 4-seeded Terrapins in a contest in Columbus that featured a lot of trash talking and some pretty physical play. There appears to be some hatred of Maryland stemming from the family of WVU coach Bob Huggins, too. During and after the game, Twitter accounts seemingly belonging to Huggins’ daughters, Jenna Leigh and Jacqueline Huggins, tweeted rape jokes about Terrapins’ senior star Dez Wells. Jenna Leigh Huggins, who is listed as West Virginia’s “program assistant,” later deleted those tweets and made her Twitter account private. Screen Shot 2015-03-23 at 10.59.49 AMHuggins’ other daughter, Jacqueline, tweeted a similar joke. The tweet was still online as of Monday morning. “NO MEANS NO DEZ!” –@JennaLeigh44— (@JacqueHuggins) March 23, 2015Wells was expelled from Xavier in 2012 following a sexual assault allegation. Those allegations were deemed unworthy of prosecution, though, and Wells sued the school. The lawsuit was settled out of court “in a matter satisfactory to the parties,” according to the Washington Post. West Virginia is set to face Kentucky in the Sweet 16 on Thursday.last_img read more

Jay Williams Says Kentucky Got “Hosed” When It Comes To Seeding

first_imgUNC cheerleader walks through College GameDay live-shot.Jay Williams DukeAfter splitting the regular season title in the SEC, Kentucky and Texas A&M both reached the league’s tournament final – setting up what seemed like an all-important showdown regarding NCAA Tournament seeding. Well, that’s what we thought. The Wildcats knocked off the Aggies Sunday, taking home the trophy. But somehow, when the brackets were unveiled just hours later, Texas A&M was given a 3-seed, while UK landed on the 4-line. John Calipari, per usual, went off. It turns out some of the ESPN guys agree with him.College basketball analyst Jay Williams went as far as to say that Kentucky got “hosed” by the committee. . @KentuckyMBB got hosed. No way #BBN wins their conf tourney & share of the regular season & get a 4 seed while Texas A&M gets a 3 seed.— Jay Williams (@RealJayWilliams) March 13, 2016It’s hard to disagree here. Most thought that at worst, Kentucky would get a 3-seed, and at best, a 2-seed. The NCAA Tournament selection committee continues to baffle everyone, year after year.last_img read more

Scenic Uljaniks New Owner Form Discovery Yacht JV

first_imgzoomImage Courtesy: Janko Hoener / CC-BY-SA-4.0. UK-based company Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with a consortium of DIV/Fincantieri to collaborate on building ultra-luxury discovery yachts at the Croatian Uljanik shipyard.Signed on January 11, 2019, the LOI between Scenic and Uljanik’s newly selected strategic partner will lead the shipyard to set up a new discovery yacht division within the restructured shipbuilding group. This new joint venture will be focused on completing Scenic Eclipse, expediting the build of the second Scenic Eclipse, as well as progressing development of the next generations of Scenic’s discovery yachts, Scenic said.Scenic also revealed that the first sailing date for Scenic Eclipse, the world’s first discovery yacht, is being amended to August 15, 2019.“We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience these delays to the launch of Scenic Eclipse have caused our guests. As a company we have done everything possible to complete the ship within the time limits that were set previously, but a series of events that are outside our control have put us in a position where we must delay,” a spokesperson of Scenic stated.Launched in Pula in January 2018, the 22,498 gross ton newbuilding will be able to accommodate 237 passengers and 172 crew members. It will feature a length of 165.7 meters and a width of 21.4 meters and fly the flag of Malta. The delivery of the ship has been delayed due to ongoing financial challenges faced by Uljanik. Shipyard workers have not been paid full salaries since August 2018, which has led to strikes and manpower shortages as well as several other shipyard disruptions, resulting in months of lost production. To keep the build moving as quickly as possible, Scenic has expanded the team within the shipyard by employing cruise ship specialists from Finland, Italy, the UK and Norway. The expanded Scenic team took over the lead role in completing the ship in cooperation with the shipyard’s remaining management team.On the occasion of the LOI signing, Glen Moroney, founder and chairman of Scenic, said he believes Uljanik will soon solve financial problems the shipbuilder has been facing. What is more, Moroney said that the construction of the second discovery yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, will start following the approval of the shipbuilder’s restructuring program. The parties have commenced works on designing a new series of Scenic’s ultra-luxury expedition cruise ships to be built at Uljanik.last_img read more

Hurricane Dorian damages 13000 houses in Bahamas

first_imgGeneva: Hurricane Dorian has caused “extensive damage” across the Bahamas, the Red Cross said Monday, warning that as many as 13,000 houses may have been severely damaged or destroyed. “We don’t yet have a complete picture of what has happened,” Sune Bulow, head of the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and Red Crescent Societies’ Emergency Operation Centre in Geneva, said in a statement. “But it is clear that Hurricane Dorian has had a catastrophic impact,” he said, adding that “we anticipate extensive shelter needs, alongside the need for short-term economic support, as well as for clean water and health assistance.” Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from USHurricane Dorian battered the Bahamas with ferocious wind and rain on Sunday, the monstrous Category 5 storm wrecking towns and homes as it churned on an uncertain path toward the US coast where hundreds of thousands were ordered to evacuate. There was no immediate word on casualties in the low-lying islands. But IFRC said that up to 13,000 houses may have been severely impacted. The organisation also warned that extensive flooding on the island of Abaco was believed to have contaminated wells with saltwater. IFRC said it had released 250,000 Swiss francs (USD 252,000) from its Disaster Relief Emergency Fund to bolster the initial response to the crisis, and to provide some 500 families with emergency shelter assistance. Also Read – Record number of 35 candidates in fray for SL Presidential pollsPacking sustained winds of 185 miles per hour (295 kilometre per hour), Dorian crashed onshore in the Abacos Islands, in the northwest of the Bahamas, as the strongest storm ever to hit the Caribbean chain. After days of nerve-wracking uncertainty surrounding the storm’s path, the southeastern US states of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina finally ordered coastal residents to evacuate in a mass exodus set to affect hundreds of thousands of people. The American Red Cross estimated that some 19 million people live in areas that could be impacted by the storm, with as many as 50,000 people in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina potentially in need of emergency shelter, depending on the impact.last_img read more

Manitoba politician denied quick order striking down floorcrossing law

first_imgWINNIPEG – A Manitoba law that forbids provincial politicians from switching parties by crossing the legislature floor is still alive after a judge rejected a request for a fast-track ruling that the law is unconstitutional. The Progressive Conservative government has already said it plans to repeal the law — believed to be the only one of its kind in Canada — in the near future.Steven Fletcher, an Independent member who was kicked out of the government caucus in June, wanted the law struck down before the legislature reconvenes this week following the summer break.“The legislature sits on Wednesday. (Fletcher’s) charter rights are being offended,” Fletcher’s lawyer, Bill Gange, told court Monday.A lawyer for the provincial government said that while the province plans to lift the floor-crossing ban soon — as early as Nov. 9 depending on how quickly legislation can be passed — the government denies the law is unconstitutional.“The government intends to repeal it because it is bad policy. (That) is different,” government lawyer Michael Conner said.Fletcher was kicked out of the governing Progressive Conservative caucus after criticizing the government’s plan to set up a new Crown corporation to promote energy efficiency. The former federal cabinet minister filed a lawsuit in August that asked Court of Queen’s Bench to strike down a section of the Legislative Assembly Act which says politicians who leave or are removed from one party’s caucus cannot join another. The law, enacted in 2006 by the former NDP government, requires such politicians to either sit as Independents in the legislature, or resign their seat and run in a byelection under a new party banner.Fletcher’s statement of claim alleges the law violates his rights of expression and association under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.Justice David Kroft said the matter warrants a full hearing and court dates will be set aside in the coming months. Both sides agreed the hearing may be moot at that point if the legislation ending the floor-crossing ban is passed and enacted.Fletcher has been coy about whether he would join another party’s caucus. If he were to join the Liberals, it would give them a fourth legislature seat — enough for official party status and the extra funding and staff that comes with the designation. He has also floated the idea of forming an entirely new caucus with disgruntled members of existing parties.“Mr. Fletcher wants to have the liberty to explore all of his options,” Gange said outside court.“Mr. Fletcher has had discussions with various individuals about options that are open to him, and those individuals would be both people within the legislature and people outside the legislature.”last_img read more
